Kindergarten Thematic Newsletter

February/March

Dear Parents,

We are beginning a new theme titled  Good For You.   During this theme your child will learn that a sense of well-being is attained when:

·        Bodies are healthy.

·        People feel safe and secure.

·        People feel happy and successful in accomplishing what they set out to do.

·        People care about themselves and others.

We will read the big books listed below.

I Like You

As we read our big books we will focus on the following language arts competencies:

·        Uses text structure ( narrative, expository and procedural) to predict what a story is about.

·        Knows that books are often read for information (expository).

·        Defines “problem” as the trouble in a story.

·        Defines “solution” as how a problem is fixed or corrected.

·        Knows that a problem can be solved in more than one way; identifies other possible solutions to problems in familiar stories or poems and provides support for his or her thinking.

·        Draws and writes stories with characters, a setting and two events.

·        Knows that writers leave spaces between their words.

·        Review sight words and learn new words.

·        Learn more about the letters:  J,j,  E,e, V,v, K,k .

In Mathematics, we will learn more about 9 and 10.  We will make combinations of 9 and 10 ,  seriate 5 objects and explore weight/volume.

Ask your child questions such as these to help them develop number sense and clarify thinking:

·        Tell me how you did that?

·        What is alike and or different about the solutions?

·        Have we ever solved a problem like this before?

·        Do you see a pattern? Explain.

·        Does that make sense?  Why?

·        Is that always true?

·        How do you know that?

In math and science centers, we will review classifying, estimating, graphing, counting and making patterns.

Thank you for your support!!         Kindergarten TeachersJ
