TEACHER TALK
October is a month of change. The color of the leaves become more
brilliant, the evening hours seem to arrive more quickly, and our
kids settle into familiar routines. Then, schedules change! We add
band lessons, a dash of scouts or sports, sprinkled with other
evening activities, a day off of school here, and an early dismissal
there! Perhaps additional sleep and a gentle reminder that “this
too shall pass,” will keep all of us on target.

We are nearing the end of Theme 1 in our Harcourt series/ JGB
series. We move forward with “Literature Circles” and integrating
chapter books, as students continue to explore their unique ideas,
interests, and talents. Our current character studies reveal how we
learn more about ourselves and others by creatively tackling life’s
challenges. We continue to practice strategies that good readers
use, refine our understanding of narrative elements, identify
characters’ actions and feelings, interpret points of view, and use
prefixes and suffixes to clarify word meanings.
Mathematics:
¸
Study those (0-12) math facts! Currently, we are working in our
second math unit, “Using Numbers and Organizing Data” with place
value and graphing. Next, we leap into multiplication and division!
The more difficult skills in these future chapters require a mastery
of the basic mult. facts. Encourage your student to review each
evening. The “Family Letter” is located in the Math section of your
student’s binder. It is a great resource for home study tips. Also,
visit the FGES website (Children’s Corner) to access fun math
practice games.
Science & Social Studies:
We have concluded our science unit, “Nature’s Cycles and Natural
Resources.” We will begin our Social Studies unit
on “Maryland.” ž
