Science

We will study the following four science units;

“Plants

“Forces and Motion”

“Sink or Float”

“Mystery Powders”

    During the plant unit, the students will observe and examine plants.  They will explain that plants have special parts that allow them to perform certain functions and will identify the basic needs of plants.

    While studying “Forces and Motions”, the students will learn that a “push” or a “pull” changes the motion of objects.  They will explain concepts about forces, motion and work. Also the students will construct bar graphs and use them as a tool to interpret data and reach conclusions.

    In the unit, “Sink or Float”, the students will learn about buoyancy and density.  They will compare mass and volume, and determine how they affect buoyancy through controlled testing and collected data.  The students will describe and illustrate how density, size and shape affect buoyancy.

    “Mystery Powders is a new unit in third grade.  It will focus on the chemical and physical changes of household powders.

“Here’s Looking at You” will be an integrated unit taught throughout the curriculum.  The students will visit “Foxy”, who will help them identify the dangers of using nicotine, marijuana and alcohol.  They will be able to describe the harm these drugs do to a person’s physical body and mind.
