Writing

In first grade, writing instruction is divided into two categories:  whole group writing process instruction and writer’s workshop.

During whole group writing instruction, which occurs three days a week, we concentrate on target lessons, prompts, benchmark assessments and related theme activities from our reading anthology.  Our target lessons include the processes of writing such as pre-writing, drafting, proofreading, and publishing.  At this time, grammar, punctuation and capitalization are taught.  Included during these three days are our first grade prompts and benchmarks.  This year in first grade, our students will be writing to express personal ideas, to inform and to persuade.  The writing products include stories, friendly letters and reports.

During writer’s workshop which occurs the remaining two days of the week, our time is devoted to creative writing, conferences and publication.  Our first graders can choose a writing topic of their choice and choose a form of writing to use.  The teachers use this time to conference with the first grader and provide mini-lessons on needed skills.  The children then have opportunities to publish and share.

First graders can be writers at home, too!  Families can provide opportunities for their first graders to be wonderful authors!  Writing grocery and to-do lists, keeping journals and writing letters can help your children become wonderful writers.  Below are the first grade writing skills that we work on in the classroom.  Please have your child try to use these skills in their writing at home.
