At its April 14, 2008 meeting, the Board of Education began the process of naming the new elementary school being built with an entrance off Red Pump Road (near Vale Road) just north of Bel Air. The school is due to open in time for the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. The Board of Education has the responsibility, under Maryland law, to name or rename schools or school property. Harford Board Policy directs that, 60 days prior to the naming of a facility, a public announcement of the intent to name the facility be made; and that news releases be disseminated and other ways of inviting the public to suggest names either to the Superintendent in writing (HCPS/A.A. Roberty Building, 102 S. Hickory Avenue, Bel Air, MD 21014) or at a Board regular meeting during the “Public Comment” time prior to the expiration of the 60-day period be announced. Suggested names for the building – which, if it involves the naming of the structure for a person living or dead, should take into consideration significant contributions made by that person to education.
Following the timeline set by Board Policy, the Board intends to name the Red Pump Road/Vale Road building at its June 23, 2008 meeting (6:30 p.m.; HCPS/A.A. Roberty Building). For more information, call 410-588-5203.
