HCPS Board Meeting Highlights

Monday, December 15, 2003

At the Board of Education's regular business meeting on Monday, December 15, 2003 at Magnolia Middle School, the following actions and discussions took place.

Recognition

  • HCPS Educator Hall of Fame December honorees were inducted - Thomas E. Owen and Joseph M. Deschak
  • Karen Zello, Bel Air Middle School and Bonnie Fry, C. Milton Wright High School were recognized as recipients of the 2003 Simon A. McNeely Awards for outstanding physical education instruction.
  • Bel Air and C. Milton Wright High Schools were recognized as 2003-05 Physical Education Demonstration Schools; and Homestead Wakefield Elementary School was recognized as a 2003-05 Honor Roll Demonstration School.
  • The fall 2003 interscholastic state athletic champions from Harford County were recognized:
    • Patrick Hinch, Aberdeen High School Class 1A/2A State Golf Champion
    • Allison Barnes, C. Milton Wright High School Class 3A Girls Cross Country Champion
    • Joppatowne High School Class 1A Football Champions
    • Aberdeen High School Class 2A Football Champions
  • Hunter Long, second grade, Homestead-Wakefield Elementary School was recognized for having designed the artwork used on the cover of the Harford County Public Schools holiday greeting card.
  • Emily Schmidt, fourth grade, North Harford Elementary School was recognized for having designed the artwork used on the cover of the Maryland State Department of Education holiday greeting card.

Action Items

  • Consent Agenda -The Board unanimously approved items on the Consent Agenda including the Monthly Report on Personnel; Transfer of School Bus Contracts; and Proposed January Resolutions on National Mentoring Month, Maryland Reading Month, and African American History Month/Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
  • The Board voted unanimously to approve the Internal Audit/Audit Committee and Committee Charter.
  • The Board voted unanimously to appoint William M. Ekey as Principal of C. Milton Wright High School.

Presentations

  • The Board received the Proposed FY05 Superintendent's Operating Budget. The Board will hold a series of public hearings and work sessions on the proposed budget Board of Education Budget Meetings on the HCPS web site. Also, the Proposed FY05 Operating Budget is listed in the Budget section of the HCPS web site.
  • The Board received an update on current construction projects.
  • The Board received an update on the Secondary School Reform proposals including career clusters, alternative education and ninth grade transition.
  • The Board of Education received a recommendation for a change in the 2004-05 calendar involving the April 7, 8, and 11 inservice days (This proposal will be on the HCPS web site soon).

Board Comments

  • Student Representative Mike Morey reminded the Board of the impending election of the 2004-05 student representative to the Board which is to occur at C. Milton Wright High School on Wednesday, December 17th.
