INTERVENTIONS
The Student Assistance Program is a prevention and intervention program; it is not punitive or a form of treatment. Programs exist in middle and high schools throughout the county and consist of a core team of professionally trained members including:
  • Counselors
  • Teachers
  • Nurse
  • Administration
  • Community Agency liaisons - - Adolescent Addictions' Counselors from the Harford County Health Department

The goal of the Student Assistance Program is to identify adolescents whose behavior, attendance, or grades indicate that they may have a problem related to alcohol and/or other drug use or an emotional problems that may result in violence. Those identified as being at-risk are directed to appropriate services.

How are students identified?
Students, parents, teachers, or community members may refer a student to the Student Assistance team. Students may also refer themselves. After a referral form is completed, the team leader begins the data collection process. All information is kept confidential and no data is kept in the student's permanent record. Information is reviewed to determine if a possible problem exists. Student attendance is reviewed, as well as current grades. Indicators such as office referrals or visits to the health suite are also noted. If the information indicates that further study is needed, the collected data is shared with parents who are encouraged to participate in the process. Parental involvement, in all phases of the Student Assistance Program, is a vital part of the decision-making process. This involvement is the key to a successful resolution. All referrals are kept confidential from outside sources.
