Erik Debye wins TuGIS Map Competition Three schools in Harford County have taken part in a project hosted by www.ESRI.com, industry leader in GIS software. These schools have all created kid-designed web pages that describe their locations in many terms. These three schools are the only elementary schools in Maryland to take part in this worthy activity, and among the elementary schools in the country to have done so. Click on your school service area to see the status of your Community Atlas Project.

to find the start page for participation in this interesting project. Geospatial Technologies is a relatively new field to education. It incorporates technology with geography to help us better understand our world. The possibilities are huge for education, as GIS (Global Information Services) and GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) offer opportunities to incorporate math, science, language arts in activities that allow students to work at the upper end of Bloom's Taxonomy - to analyze and synthesize information. This page offers several links to information online that supports the use of GPS/GIS in the classroom and beyond. www.geocaching.org - Use this site to go afield and practice GPS skills. There are caches hidden all over the world, including dozens within Harford County. Have fun with the entire family exploring while you search out the caches with your GPS unit. When you travel, go prepared with printouts for a couple of caches in the area. These will help you get "off the beaten path" and into the neighborhoods of your vacation community. The Confluence Project - This fascinating site is based on the confluences of latitude and longitude all over the world. Folks visit these places, write about their experience and post text and pictures to the website. There are thousands of confluences all over the world - three in Maryland and seven in Pennsylvania. Visiting the site is a great way to virtually travel the world and be more aware of your location. Google Earth - This is a wonderful program to help children and adults alike gain a better understanding of the earth. The link connects to the location and explanation of the download. The many features of this free program give it great depth and interest. ESRI.com Educational Resources - this ESRI page contains many links to the best GIP/GIS resources.
