Mark Herzog is currently the
Assistant Supervisor of Science for the Harford County
Public Schools and the manager
of the school system’s environmental education center, Harford Glen. Mark is married with two children, lives in
Bel Air and has worked for the school system since 1978. He taught both middle school and high
school science through 20 years of classroom experience. In his final year as a classroom teacher,
Mark initiated and taught four sections of Advanced Placement Environmental
Science; the first time that course had been offered in Harford County.
Mark
is originally from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, attended Penn
State University
and graduated from Mansfield University in north, central Pennsylvania. He has a Master’s of Education from Towson University. Mark has been a department chairperson,
served on numerous curriculum committees, taught a workshop on Thinking
Skills, wrote performance assessment items for the Maryland Department of
Education, wrote and presented a three credit in-service course for teachers
titled, Improving Science Instruction, was selected as the Maryland Soil Conservation
Educator of the Year in 1998, wrote lesson plans and accompanying teacher
materials for the Discovery Channel, served on the selection committee for
the Governor's Academy and Presidential award applicants for MSDE, evaluated
EPA and NOAA regional grant applications, assisted the MD State Department of
Education with revision of the Maryland Science Standards, written for and
received numerous environmental education grants, chaired many science
curriculum revision committees, taught a course through Towson University
titled, Teaching Beyond the Science Kit,
and been responsible for the organization and operation of the
County’s elementary science kits program.
