North Bend Elementary Jump Rope for Heart and Community
Several years ago, North Bend Elementary School decided that instead of using money to purchase gifts as student incentives and rewards for the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser they would instead donate that money to help provide equipment for a needy school in Maryland.  By doing this, students are involved in two community services: giving to the American Heart Association as well as to a school in need.

Last year, the physical education teacher of the school who received the additional equipment sent a letter to Mrs. Rutledge, physical education teacher at North Bend, expressing her appreciation.  In addition, the teacher’s 5th grade students wrote thank you notes.  These letters were shared with North Bend students.

North Bend Elementary students have found this a very rewarding component of the Jump Rope for Heart project and enjoy hearing how their money helps purchase balls and other physical education equipment for a needy school.

The students also receive a pink heart and are asked to discuss at home how heart disease has impacted their family.  They write the names of relatives on the heart and an "Honor Wall" is created in the school’s gymnasium.  During the Jump Rope for Heart activities, the students have the opportunity to view the wall and jump in honor of these people on the day of their event.

Congratulations to North Bend Elementary School for giving back and educating the community about heart disease!
