Edgewood Elementary Students Make State Finals in Black Saga State Competition
On Saturday, March 14, Edgewood Elementary School’s Kennysha Ocasio Gonzalez (5th grader), Tiarah Vickers (5th grader), and Isabel Bray (4th grader) competed in the 18th Annual Black Saga State Competition at Towson University and placed 9th in the state.  These talented Edgewood students prepared for the competition by studying over 1,000 facts, collaboratively, with their committed Eagles Club members after school. On February 12, during Edgewood Elementary’s Celebrating Our History Assembly, Kennysha, Tiarah and Isabel earned first place during the in school Black Saga Competition where they competed against nine of their peers.  Not only did these dedicated students study during school and in the Eagles Club afterschool program, their families were also an integral part in preparing for their child’s wonderful accomplishment.

For nine years, Edgewood Elementary has been competing in the Black Saga Competition by providing 4th and 5th grade students with the opportunity to participate in Eagles Club.  The purpose of this club is to enhance students’ knowledge of the African American experience from 1492 until present day, as well as build confidence, instill positive self-image, and encourage team building.  This academic program also complements our social studies curriculum by helping students gain a truly accurate and inclusive depiction of our history.

Not only did Kennysha, Tiarah, and Isabel represent Edgewood Elementary, they also proudly represented Harford County.  These extraordinary students will be recognized with their families at an award reception at University of Maryland Baltimore County in June, alongside the other nine teams from Baltimore and Prince George’s Counties who made it to the final Top 10 Black Saga Competition. Edgewood Elementary is extremely proud of Kennysha, Tiarah, and Isabel making it to the finals.  Since October, these three young ladies have been committed to learning over 800 questions related to the African American experience and their hard work is commended.
