National art winner from Harford Technical High School
Ms. Judy Demond, newly retired art teacher from Harford Technical High School, has entered her students’ work into the Brighter World Students’ Online Art Contest, sponsored by Sargent Art, for the past several years.  One of her art students, senior Boma Tende, was named the 2016 national grand prize winner!  Boma, her family and Ms. Demond attended an awards banquet in New York to accept her award.  In addition to a goodie bag of art supplies provided at check-in at the hotel, guests also received tours, meals and even tickets to a Broadway show!  It was a wonderful experience for everyone!

Boma graduated this year from Harford Technical High School’s masonry program and will be attending University of Maryland College Park in the fall to major in civil engineering with a minor in art.  She included art in her schedule all four years of high school, and her work was consistently chosen to be in county exhibits as well as state exhibits. Her prismacolor drawing of lilies was selected by the state superintendent to be displayed on an easel outside the state office.

Ms. Demond retired after teaching for 40 years, 32 of which for Harford County Public Schools, and 25 at Harford Technical High School. Even though art is not a completer at Tech, she has known that her students’ work has always been exceptional. Having the opportunity to take part in this award recognition with her student was a great way to end her career!

In addition, Katie Snyder, a former student of Ms. Demond, was the 2011 national winner.

Congratulations to both Boma and Ms. Demond!
