Maryland Breakfast Challenge Kicks Off at Dublin Elementary
Superintendent Barbara Canavan, Board President Nancy Reynolds, Board Member James Thornton, County Councilman Chad Shrodes and school system leaders joined Dublin Principal Celeste Klima to kick off the Maryland Breakfast Challenge this morning.  Invited guests took a tour of the school’s cafeteria and saw breakfast preparation, and then joined a fifth grade class for breakfast before the start of the school day.  Following breakfast in the classroom, the entire school gathered in the auditorium for a pep rally about breakfast and Dublin pride.  All other HCPS schools enrolled in the challenge today, too.

About the Breakfast Challenge
The breakfast challenge is open to all public schools, from pre-kindergarten through grade 12.  The enrollment period started with the new school year and is open until October 31, 2014.  Principals enroll in the challenge for their school.  Individual schools will compete against each other within their district, allowing for 24 individual school winners across the state.  In addition, school districts will compete against each other for the greatest growth in school breakfast participation system-wide.

Winners will be selected based on highest growth in average daily breakfast participation, measured from November 1, 2014, through January 31, 2015, compared to the same window of time during the 2013-14 school year.  Winners will be announced in March 2015.  Schools and school districts are eligible to win:
  • Cash prizes
  • In-school celebration events
  • And more!
