Meadowvale Elementary School
Home of the Mustangs
School Structure:
All classroom teachers construct their schedules around special area classes: vocal music, physical education, media center, and art. The students in grades 1, 2, and 3 receive all classroom instruction from one teacher. Students in grades 4 and 5 change classes for language arts and mathematics.
About our School:
Located on 13 acres near the confluence of the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay, Meadowvale Elementary is situated in an area resplendent with history, recreation, and commerce. The school’s attendance area attracts a diversity of families interested in the activities and amenities offered in the historic community of Havre de Grace and surrounding area. With the divergence of families attracted to the community, the school benefits from a variety of multicultural influences. The children find unity in their desire to achieve academically and through character education.
The students, teachers, and staff are supported by an active PTA. In addition to providing field trips and cultural activities for the students, the PTA provides volunteers to assist with both instructional and clerical needs. The PTA and the school work together for the success of the students. The school improvement plan focuses on the needs of the students in order for them to achieve successfully in reading, writing, and mathematics. Aside from the regular classroom instruction, students benefit from a variety of reading intervention programs during the early grades. Student success is measured not only by mandated state testing programs, but also by a variety of performance assessments developed by the Harford County Public Schools. Generally, the students perform at or slightly above the county average.
Renovated in 2001, the school offers many modern instructional advantages associated with technology. Each teacher has a personal computer in addition to three computers for student use within each classroom. For whole-group instruction, the computer lab has 25 computers. Additionally, there are six computers in the media center. All computers are connected to the Internet and have e-mail capabilities.
Meadowvale is described as having a very friendly and welcoming environment. Within this type of environment, students can concentrate on learning and teachers can concentrate on student success. Through the combined efforts of home, school, and community, the students who attend Meadowvale are provided with a great start for their future.
Community Involvment:
The greatest community involvement that MVES has is a very active and dedicated PTA. Through this organization, the school receives political support, moral support, financial support, and classroom support. The Havre de Grace Police Department is a very supportive partner. Aside from the routine sharing of information regarding situations that may have impact on the school, the police have assisted with bus evacuation drills, classroom presentations, and bicycle safety instruction.
Many businesses in the community provide financial support by making donations or by purchasing fundraiser products from the PTA; however, the greatest impact the business community has is most noticable on "Career Day." On this day, 60 local businesses send representatives and displays to share with our curious students.
