Bel Air Middle students raise money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis
On April 10, students at Bel Air Middle School participated in a Walk-a-Thon to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. This idea was brought up by the students who decided to use their service learning project for this cause that is close to their teacher, Crystal Smith. Ms. Smith’s son, Jude, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and spent the first part of his life in the NICU. After the classes heard about Jude (also referred to as “SuperJude”) and his struggles, the students came up with a plan for their service learning. Students decided to participate in a Walk-a-Thon to raise money to find a cure. In addition to monies raised for the Walk-a-Thon event, students also collected 1,330 lbs. of clothing, made posters and announcements, and sold ribbons during the school day. A total of $1,700.00 was raised by Bel Air Middle for research. The team then created shirts to commemorate the day. The students completed their walk and even had a surprise visit by the inspiring adorable SuperJude. The students at Bel Air Middle are in hopes that the money raised will change the lives of those living with Cystic Fibrosis.
