HHS Robotics Team Advances to MD FTC Championship
On February 7, while most Marylanders were Super Bowl focused, the Havre de Grace High School (HHS) FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team “Spears & Gears” was engaged in intense robotics competition in the last Maryland Qualifier event of the season, which was held at River Hill High School in Clarksville, Maryland.

After 34 qualifying matches, the Havre de Grace team had powered their way to a third place ranking among a field of 28 teams. Spears & Gears, along with their two alliance partners from Garrett and Montgomery counties, went on to win the semi-final round and were only stopped in the final match.

As a result of the team’s outstanding performance, Spears & Gears qualified for advancement to the Maryland FTC Championship to be held February 21, 2016, at Georgetown Prep in North Bethesda, Maryland.

Congratulations to all HHS robotics team members, and especially Ken Bracken, Ryan Howes, and Laura Brown, who put on an impressive display of robot control and last minute programming and mechanical design changes. Coaches Craig Kostyshyn and Shawna Ashman would also like to recognize the team’s exceptional demonstration of gracious professionalism through interactions with judges, competition officials, alliance partners, and the remaining field of robotics teams.
