Hickory Elementary School's Sensory Garden is growing!

On Tuesday, April 18, 2017, the Primary and Intermediate STRIVE students at Hickory Elementary School took part in expanding the school's Sensory Garden.

In a collaborative effort between staff from Harford Glen Environmental Education Center and Hickory Elementary School, the students planted an assortment of items in the garden such as different varieties of lettuce seeds and seedlings, horseradish, three types of mint, ostrich ferns, three kinds of potatoes, and other plant varieties.

The STRIVE students participated in this activity with the help of Hickory Elementary School's 5th grade Learning Pals and Student Council officers, who guided them through the activity and provided many opportunities for social language and interactions.

Planning and prepping for the garden included many different groups working together:  Harford Glen; Master Gardeners of Harford County; Hickory's Ecology Club, First Lego League, Student Council, Learning Pals, and Hot Spots after school program; and many Hickory staff members who have volunteered their time and energy to the project.

The students will take part in a second planting in May that will include planting tomatoes, squash, beans, herbs, dwarf sunflowers, radish, several flower varieties, and expanding the existing pollinator garden and compost bins.
