World Languages

FL01: French I
This course introduces listening, speaking, writing, and reading of French. Students are required to memorize and reproduce vocabulary, communicate orally in French, write with grammatical accuracy, and demonstrate an appreciation of the cultures of the French speaking world. Successful completion of this course earns one credit. Note: Based on course grades and examination results, HCPS will award credit for completion of French I, German I, and Spanish I in middle school. Credit awarded for completion of French I, German I, and Spanish I in middle school will contribute toward the World Language graduation requirements.

FL03: AP French III
This is a college level course designed to provide students with an ability to not only communicate in the French language, but also to understand the linguistic patterns of the language via an array of prescribed AP reading selections. Students will further their understanding of the French language through additional oral and writing activities. Students may take the College Board Advanced Placement Test at the completion of the course. Successful completion of this course earns one credit.
FL03: French III
This course requires the student to attain a communicative proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through independent and group interactions. The course includes a more advanced study of the vocabulary and structure of the language, as well as a study of history, using short literary selections in addition to authentic materials. Successful completion of this course earns one credit.
FL03: HCC FR 201 Intermediate French I
This course continues to develop language skills in French at an advanced level. Cultural materials are also integrated into course content and activities. Usually offered in fall semester.
FL04W: French IV
This course promotes the continued understanding and refinement of the linguistic, cultural, historical, and literary features associated with the acquisition of the French language. It is expected that the student will communicate primarily in the target language. Successful completion of this course earns one credit.
FL04W: HCC FR 202 Intermediate French II
This course emphasizes the continued refinement and development of language skills in French at an advanced level. Students also discuss cultural materials. Usually offered in spring semester.
FL06: AP French Language and Culture
This is a college level course designed to provide students with an ability to not only communicate in the French language, but also to understand the linguistic patterns of the language via an array of prescribed AP reading selections. Students will further their understanding of the French language through additional oral and writing activities. Spanish 4 will certainly expand your language skills. However, it will also take you on a fascinating cultural journey. You’ll experience the language’s rich traditions and superstitions. Through exploring the past, you’ll come to understand the importance of community, family, and personal relationships. You will be immersed in culture—movement, art, music, literature. Meeting real people and hearing their stories will allow you to gain new vocabulary, have better command of the language, and understand your role as a global citizen.

This college level course is designed to provide students with an introduction to literature written in Spanish. The course introduces students to the formal study of a representative body of texts from Peninsular Spanish, Latin American, and U.S. Hispanic literature. The course provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their proficiency in Spanish across the three modes of communication and the five goal area outlined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. FL45: ESOL I
ESOL 1 is designed as an introductory course to provide students with coping skills and cultural information to help them understand the contexts of language use. Students are taught how to function in a limited way in English to meet their immediate needs. They perform basic language functions, such as naming and asking for things, using polite expressions, expressing personal information, and giving directions. They acquire the most common vocabulary for everyday life, understand short conversations containing common words and phrases, picking out and responding to elements important to the meaning. Students will be able to comprehend and use the basic structures of English including simple tenses, nouns, adjectives. They perform simple writing functions, such as filling out a form, and learn paragraph structure and organization.
FL46: ESOL 2
ESOL II is designed to move students beyond a limited number of learned phrases, and begin to function with some independence and creativity. They increase passive knowledge of vocabulary and understand fluent, simplified speech. Students attempt to use newly acquired vocabulary and sentence structures, and perform some basic language functions, such as making requests politely, describing problems, and asking for directions. They improve pronunciation, read simplified practical materials, perform simple writing tasks, with some guidance, such as filling out forms, communicating with short notes, and writing a well-organized paragraph.
FL47: ESOL 3
ESOL III is designed to push students toward general and some specific language of the content areas while being able to develop expanded sentences in oral interaction or written paragraphs. Additionally, students will be able to produce oral or written language with phonological, syntactic, or semantic errors that may impede the communication, but retain much of its meaning, when presented with oral or written, narrative, or expository descriptions with sensory, graphic, or interactive support?.
