Staff development days are provided annually for the foreign language educators of Harford County Public Schools. The foreign language educators often provide the topics of the staff development days themselves. The Supervisor of Foreign Languages creates agendas that reflect the educators' interests and needs so that the days are meaningful experiences for the staff.
For the June 2002 Staff Development Day, the French and German teachers discussed necessary revisions to their respective Level II countywide assessments. The Spanish teachers worked to create a Level II countywide assessment, which will piloted during the 2002-2003 school year.
The November 2001 Staff Development Day featured Mr. Frank Edgerton, Maryland State Department of Education Specialist in Second and Foreign Language Learning. Ms. Kimberly Smith presented the updated version of the Harford County Public Schools Foreign Language Education Program web site. Additionally, the three language groups met independently of one another to achieve final consensus on the forthcoming Level 2 countywide assessment.
Previous staff development day topics have included:
The generation of specific language-learning activities which can be included in the HCPS curriculum guides.
Discussions of what should be included in the Level II countywide assessments.
HCPS Level I Final Assessment Overview
ACTFL Standards for Foreign Language Learning Orientation
Brainstorming ideas for increasing enrollment
