- To what extent have the human induced changes impacted the natural
succession process in Harford Glen?
|
|
4
|
- Mr. Burley (teacher at Harford Glen):
- Since we have already disturbed the natural succession in the wetlands,
Mr. Burley feels that there should be a management plan, also concerning
the pine forest.
- Mrs. Murray (neighbor of Harford Glen):
- As a citizen, Mrs. Murray doesn’t
understand why we are trying to kill the plant.
- She thinks they attract
butterflies and they are very pretty.
- She think there should be more of this plant because of how pretty it
is.
- Dr. Baker-Brosh (Ecologist):
- Non-Native plants are bad because they take the place of Native plants
- Harford Glen could be doing a better job at getting rid of Non-Natives,
but it would take a lot of volunteers and time.

- Original Research Question:
- To what extent are the wetland plants in Harford Glen obligate,
facultative or upland (Native or

- -native to Eurasia
- -capable of replacing native vegetation in a number of wetland
environments
- -30-50 stems arising from one rootstock

- Went out to the wetlands and distinguished our part of wetlands to study
with our partners
- Marked points with the Purple Loosestrife and/or Tear-thumb plants with
our GPS units
- Wrote the GPS points and plant species down in our notebooks
- Analyzed our data

- The Formula for finding % of the species is: Total plant area in square
feet/total area in square feet= % of plant in the area.
- Mile-a-Minute: 917 sq. ft./ 36154.8 sq. ft.= 2.54%
- Loosestrife: 632 sq. ft./36154.8 sq. ft.= 1.89%
