Fallston High art students create clay insect sculptures for Harford Glen

Fallston High School advanced level art students collaborated with Harford Glen teachers Melanie Kane and Ruth Eisenhour during a field trip to Harford Glen to learn about a variety of predator/prey relationships that exist within our local ecosystem.

After becoming more familiar with the relationships between the insects, they also learned about the anatomy of the insects. This was followed with a scavenger hunt throughout Harford Glen with insect boxes, nets, and magnifying glasses for a closer look at the actual species. Students created sketches that they took back to Fallston High School.

Working with their art teacher, Mrs. Sauer, they learned about contemporary artists Louise Bourgeois and David Miller who have both used insects as the subject of their large scale sculptures. Students paired off and created larger than life clay sculptures of their insects. These are currently being installed at Harford Glen and will provide the opportunity for younger grade levels and the public to participate in a scavenger hunt around the property.
