Drumming for Fitness at Norrisville Elementary School

Norrisville Elementary School students in all grades participated in a special area team event, “Drumming for Fitness” – a program that combines reading and performing rhythms with physical activity.

Students performed rhythms during exercise routines using rhythm sticks/pool noodles and exercise balls. Students were working towards objectives from both the physical education and music curriculum specific to their grade level such as: read and perform with rhythmic accuracy; maintain steady beat and tempo within a group performance; strike an object using an implement with dominant and non-dominant hands; increase heart rate; and demonstrate the Components of Fitness, which are flexibility, aerobic capacity and muscular strength and endurance.

Working cooperatively across special area content areas leads to lasting interdisciplinary connections for our students.
