At the beginning of each school year, children in the fourth and fifth grades are provided an opportunity to participate in the school instrumental music program.  They are provided an opportunity to learn to plan the instrument in small groups and also to participate in a large group (band) as they show progress.  It is quite important that the children studying an instrument practice each day.  Music lessons are scheduled for each child twice a week.  In order that she/he does not miss the same classroom lesson each day, the music schedule is staggered.  However, each pupil is responsible for making up any work missed in the classroom during his/her lessons.  The school provides information about companies dealing with musical instruments to help the parents and children make a choice.  These instruments may be rented or purchased.

There will be a parent meeting in September to discuss any questions or concerns about the instrumental program.

Vocal-General music teachers work in our school with all children.  Music is an of the RWES curriculum which gives specific attention to meeting the aesthetic, emotional, physical and social needs of girls and boys, in addition to providing opportunities for intellectual development.  The music program is organized around broad objectives which contribute to this growth and enrichment of the individual child.  Opportunities for listening, singing, playing instruments and adding movements are provided during classes.  Grades Kindergarten through five have music class three fourty-five minute periods every two weeks.  Grades three, four and five all use recorders in music class.  Students are required to purchase a recorder of their own.  The school store sells these recorders at cost which can save parents a few dollars.  A letter goes home to all third, fourth and fifth grade students during September explaining about the cost of the recorders and how to preorder.  Because reading and writing across the curriculum is emphasized, students in third, fourth, and fifth grades are also  required to have a music folder with writing paper for music class.
