John Archer School
Where All Students Experience Success!
School Structure:
Classes at John Archer are organized by departments: pre-primary; primary; intermediate; middle; and high school. Instruction is scheduled within the framework of the department as well as school-wide time blocks, including special areas. There is flexibility for students to participate in community work experience programs. A post-secondary class is located at Harford Community College for selected students in their last 2 years of school.
About our School:
John Archer School is the only public special education school serving students with disabilities in Harford County. Our staff members are committed to meeting the needs of students with significant disabilities. In a positive, welcoming environment, our students are challenged to meet high expectations, so that they can develop skills needed for independence. Working in partnership with parents, we believe that all of our students can achieve success.
Our school improvement plan focuses on student achievement. Current areas of focus for school improvement include functional academics, career vocational skills, and community skills. Reviews of student achievement, and annual staff and parent surveys, help our school improvement team to prioritize goals for school improvement.
The instructional program is tailored to meet individual student needs, based on individual education plan goals. Instructional areas may include communication, functional academics, behavior and social skills, personal management, decision making, community skills, recreation and leisure skills, and career vocational skills.
In addition to serving students with significant special needs, our school houses the Harford County Infant and Toddlers Program, countywide special education itinerant services, and the Teen Diversion Program.
Located next to Harford Technical High School, and across the street from Harford Community College, our students benefit from excellent volunteer services provided by high school and college students. With our supportive school community, we believe that all of our students will experience success.
Community Involvement:
JAS benefits from many business and community partnerships. We have a partnership with the Harford County Government, who provides us with their time, talents, and services. We also receive support from various groups, including the Joppatowne Lions Club, the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, and Oak Grove Baptist Church. For many years, Aberdeen Proving Ground has provided paid employment experiences for our students as well.
JAS has an active volunteer program. Volunteers from Harford Technical High School, Harford Community College, other colleges, community members, and parents donate their time in the classrooms and during special events. Representatives from organizations like the Junior Rangers and Pets on Wheels also visit our school on a regular basis. The Harford County Parks and Recreation sponsors an after-school childcare program and summer camp for students
