School Structure:
EMES is continuing with a block schedule to better meet the needs of our students. Students have a more stable daily schedule and common planning time is provided for teachers each day.
About our School:
Emmorton Elementary is celebrating its tenth year of successfully working with students, parents, and the greater Emmorton community. We are located in Bel Air close to Harford Glen, the county’s premier outdoor education center. We believe that building a strong partnership between the home and school enables us to achieve our goal of continuous achievement for all students. Our biweekly newsletter keeps parents up to date on school happenings and provides suggestions for supporting learning at home. Teacher newsletters give parents information about units of study, upcoming projects and tests, as well as a calendar of events. In collaboration with the PTA, we provide a parent academy with sessions on reading, math, enrichment, and study skills. During the second half of the year our parent academy sessions switch to family nights featuring a family reading night, an opportunity to play math games as a family, and a science presentation suitable for all family members.
The Emmorton Elementary School staff is committed to providing a challenging program for all our students. Our block schedule provides a predictable daily schedule for our students with large blocks of uninterrupted instructional time. This schedule also allows us to regroup students as needed and have our specialists plug into classrooms to provide for individual students’ needs. In reading, we focus on the “think along” strategy for improving students’ interaction with the text they are reading, which ultimately improves their comprehension. Improving students’ number sense, problem-solving abilities, and mathematical communication skills are the focus of our school math program.
“The Emmorton Way,” our character education program, is taught by our special area team to reinforce the positive behaviors and attitudes that our families are teaching at home. Character traits are introduced which can be applied at home, in school, and in the community. “The Emmorton Way” also encompasses our school motto “Soaring to great heights through learning.”
Community Involvment:
EMES is a community school with a very active PTA and volunteer program. We pride ourselves on involving students, teachers, parents, and the business community in everything that we do. We were adopted into a business partnership with the Harford Mall and have worked with many other businesses, including Burger King, Kleinís Super Thrift, Giant Food, and Ice World.
EMES is open 6 days a week to accommodate the needs of our community, providing meeting and activity space for the Emmorton Parks and Recreation Council, scout troops, and homeowners groups. Morning and after school daycare is provided on the premises through the YMCA. Finally, our staff is involved in the community through the Adopt-A-Road program and the Kids C.A.N. mentoring program.
