About our School:
For the past 40 years, the professional staff at William Paca/Old Post Road Elementary School has worked tirelessly to help all of its students achieve academic excellence. Our location on Old Philadelphia Road ensures that our students come from a diverse geographic area and mandates that our school vision emphasizes inclusion for all, an appreciation for diversity, and a focus on student achievement.
We are aided in our mission by an active PTA that vigorously supports all school initiatives. Parent volunteers provide valuable service in our school everyday and a variety of program offerings help us to accommodate the diverse learning styles of our students. Support programs such as School-wide Enrichment, a centralized computer lab, and outreach programs for School Health Readiness and student counseling needs help to facilitate success for the whole child. Title I resources such as our Home Visitor and grant-funded Title I Teacher Specialists and Harford County staff positions such as our Teacher Mentor and Instructional Facilitator provide ongoing opportunities for staff and family development. Intervention programs such as ReAch, RACE, and LAUNCH provide valuable additional practice opportunities for at-risk learners, as do our school-based Speech/Language and Special Education staff members. A variety of preschool programs and nine full-day Kindergarten classes provide early learning experiences for our youngest learners and help to build a strong foundation for future school success.
Our School Improvement Team has utilized the analysis of existing data and an extensive knowledge of research-based best practices to target areas for school-wide improvement. Our current School Improvement Plan has identified reading, math, and character education goals as “best bets” for achieving continuous, ongoing school improvement. At William Paca/Old Post Road Elementary, the notion of leaving no child behind is not rhetoric or new thinking – it is a reality that we strive for every day.
Community Involvment:
WPES is truly a community school. An active PTA vigorously supports all school progrWPES. Band, chorus, and orchestra parents provide encouragement and support for activities such as concerts. Parents volunteer in the media center, office, and classrooms. African-American men volunteer as tutors and mentors for the Saturday Assistance Program.
A partnership with Aberdeen Proving Ground and the APGFCU has provided field trip opportunities and supplies for the school. The Lions Club fundraiser benefits WPES as well. AHS students fulfill community work service hours at WPES. The building is open for use by a local church, parks and recreation, and civic groups.
