School Structure:

BES has implemented scheduled block times at each grade level for reading and math. The block times make it possible to meet the individual needs of students. Kindergarten students are regrouped for reading during the year. Teachers are provided with opportunities to plan together on a weekly basis. A variety of staff development activities are planned to focus on student achievement.

About our School:
Bakerfield Elementary School Mascot

Bakerfield Elementary is a medium-sized suburban school located in the town of Aberdeen. In the year 2000, a major modernization project was completed which increased the size of the school by 13 percent. Highlights include a new library, a TV studio, additional classrooms, an enlarged gym, and a new computer lab. Each classroom has at least two computers, a wall mounted television, and Internet capability.

A strong commitment toward community and school pride has been a mainstay at Bakerfield for well over forty years. Bakerfield derives its strength from the growing diversity of its community, which unites families from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and neighborhoods. A strong, active, and supportive PTA works closely with the school to provide family activities, financial assistance and volunteers to support the needs of the students and staff.

Our shared vision is to create a safe and nurturing environment where everyone is actively involved in the teaching and learning process. Bakerfield is also a professional site for student teachers from the College of Notre Dame.

Increasing student achievements is the main focal point at Bakerfield. The School Improvement Team continues to monitor pupil progress in the core areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Emphasis is also placed on narrowing the achievement gap between various ethnic groups and maintaining a strong character education program. Other programs for students include ReAch (a primary reading tutorial program), Title 1 support, the Home Visitor program, reading intervention, the School-Wide Enrichment Model, Maryland/DC Stock Market Game, a pre-kindergarten class and full-day kindergarten.

With the help of a dedicated and committed staff, our school motto “learning, sharing and caring” helps to crystallize our shared vision on a daily basis.

Community Involvment:

BES offers many opportunities for involvement by the community. Some include a home visitor program; using high-school student volunteers, which helps them meet their community service requirement; offering a program to all students by the Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union which pertains to personal finance (Moola Moola); and organizing annual family fun nights for reading and math.

The building is used by other community organizations. Parks and Recreation offers community programs, and the YMCA offers a before and after school daycare program. BES's PTA is very supportive. They conduct several fundraisers during each year. The funds provide playground equipment, field trips, audio-visual equipment, and cultural arts programs. The campus is used for practices and sporting events by the high school.
