School Structure:
The EMS schedule is a four block schedule that allows for anywhere from 5-8 periods of flexible scheduling. A block is 90 minutes long, and if split into two periods, each period is 45 minutes long. Language Arts and Math are always taught during a 90 minute block. Social Studies and Science may be 45 or 90 minutes. All Unified Arts and Physical Education classes are 45 minutes.
About our School:
Edgewood Middle School empowers students to learn, dream, and lead. Every student is valued, respected, and supported. While addressing their unique needs, we meet students where they are and help them make strides to obtain academic success. Our highly qualified teaching staff provides extensive opportunities for students to build character and acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to reach their full potential. We strive to cultivate good citizens and instill a passion for lifelong learning. We believe that there are no limits to what our students can achieve.
Edgewood Middle School students access a rigorous curriculum of 90 minutes of daily math and reading (language arts) instruction, and 45 minutes of daily science, social studies, and unified arts instruction. Students also have opportunities to participate in physical education and performing arts education. Additional emphasis is placed on reading and math through intervention and enrichment programs.
As a professional learning community, students and staff engage in ongoing collaboration and learning for continuous growth. Teacher teams meet regularly and engage in job-embedded professional development to discuss student performance, examine data, evaluate instructional practices, and enhance curriculum implementation. We count on the support of parents and all members of the school community to make our school a premiere educational environment. In partnership, we empower, inspire, and achieve together.
Community Involvement:
Edgewood is a supportive community. It is believed that a school's success comes, in part, from the support it receives.
The PTSA has become a true partner in education. Due to increased membership, the PTSA has been recognized by both the local and state council of PTAs. Their involvement in school decision making is critical and vital to school success. Parent support has assisted the school's efforts to promote enrichment opportunities, student awards and recognition, business partnerships, assemblies, field trips, and various volunteer activities. Increased parental support has contributed to a positive school climate at EMS.
We work in partnership with The Greater Edgewood Education Foundation, a non-profit partnership of diverse community members who will build community partnerships that will raise public awareness, pride and support for the quality of education in the Greater Edgewood Area Schools and enhance educational opportunities for its students.
We are also part of The Edgewood Learning Community, a group that unifies the efforts of our feeder system, aligning the vision and efforts of five feeder elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school.
