Melanie Kane
Outdoor Educator melanie.kane@hcps.org

Melanie grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. She graduated from Villa Julie College (now Stevenson University) with a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education. Melanie pursued her Master's Degree through Walden University with a focus on reading instruction. She has also enjoyed taking various environmental classes that are offered through the school system.

Melanie taught grades 4 and 5 at North Harford Elementary for thirteen years. In addition to being a classroom teacher, Melanie was a seasonal naturalist and ran the summer camp at Nixon Park Nature Center in Pennsylvania working with elementary through high school aged children.

In 2014 Melanie received Harford County's Green Teacher of the Year award for being a green leader in her school. She initiated projects in her school such as composting, Waste-Free Wednesday, TerraCycle, and school gardens. She also worked with a group of teachers to obtain Green School Certification. Melanie received a curriculum award in 2014 for her unit plan on the conservation of Monarch butterflies. She transferred to Harford Glen in the fall of 2014 to begin her career as an environmental educator.

In her spare time, Melanie enjoys spending time outside with her husband and two boys. They enjoy hiking, kayaking, geocaching, birding, and nature journaling.
