North Harford High School Nutrition Manager Wins National Recognition
(National Harbor, MD – April 20, 2015) – The non-profit School Nutrition Association has awarded Earliene Klapka from North Harford High School in Harford County Public Schools the Mideast regional Manager of the Year Award, considered the highest honor a school nutrition manager can earn.  The award recognizes a cafeteria manager who has demonstrated dedication and ingenuity to improve his or her school meal program.

Earliene Klapka’s proactive vision has enhanced the cafeteria experience and increased participation in the school meal program at the North Harford High complex.  In an effort to provide nutritious meals in a creative way, she initiated a serving line dedicated to special themed entrees, including Italian, Asian, Mexican and grill-style dishes.  Leading up to its successful launch, Earliene promoted the new menu options through morning announcements, email blasts and posters made by art students.  She also established a “Hawk’s Express” line, stocked with healthy grab-n-go items, to address students’ requests for a faster lunch option.  A team leader, Earliene ensures her staff has opportunities for professional growth, offering hands-on training and supporting job rotations within the department.  Currently, Earliene is part of a planning committee working to create a community composting system within the North Harford area, utilizing food scraps from schools.

“On the front lines of school nutrition programs, dedicated cafeteria managers positively impact their students, working hard to provide nutritious, appealing meals and spearheading creative initiatives in the cafeteria,” said SNA President Julia Bauscher, SNS.  “Earliene goes above and beyond to enhance the North Harford High School community, and embodies the passion of school nutrition professionals.”

The Manager of the Year Award is in honor of Louise Sublette, a leader in school nutrition in her state and in the national School Nutrition Association.  During her 43 years in the profession, Sublette worked in many areas of foodservice—public schools, colleges, hospitals and elderly feeding programs.  Sublette dedicated her career to honoring school nutrition professionals and ensuring those who work in school cafeterias have access to professional development opportunities, empowering them to help their school meal programs flourish.

In July, Earliene will be honored during the Awards Ceremony at the School Nutrition Association’s Annual National Conference in Salt Lake City, UT.
