Have you ever stopped to think about what type of roller coaster rider you are? Do you like roller coasters? I haven’t always been a big fan of rollercoasters, but as I have gotten older, I have started to value and appreciate the fun of the ride. Although, I have noticed I am a little different on how I handle rollercoasters… The “typical” roller coaster has a steep incline with a massive drop and then speeds around twists and turns. Most people scream as the roller coaster car speeds down the drop. Not me. I scream three quarters up the incline in anticipation of the ride ahead. While everyone else is screaming, I am smiling and enjoying the ride.

My thrilling ride as HCPS Teacher of the Year is officially a month in today. And what an amazing ride it has been thus far. One of the greatest highlights of this month was the honor and privilege to attend “Stand Up for Autism: Saturday Wright Live”, which took place at C. Milton Wright High School. The mantra for the night being “One Night, One Stage, One Cause”. This show can’t be summed up into just one blog… but I am going to try.

This is a night filled with laughter, education, and founded on spreading awareness about an often-misunderstood subject: Autism. All of the proceeds raised by the nights events benefitted an organization known as “Autism Speaks”.
“Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions.

Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.”

I learned about “Stand Up for Autism: Saturday Wright Live” when Mr. Mike Brogley, 2017 Teacher of the Year finalist, contacted me asking if he could come and visit my classroom. He, along with his student, Caroline Collins, came into observe the class, videotape a lesson, as well as do an interview. In my mind, I pictured this video playing for people to view out in the lobby during intermission. I was surprised and so very honored to be a part of the show as Mr. Brogley gave the play by play entering the school, during the lesson, and yes, he even got a shot of that Jones Toyota Rav 4 I have been enjoying so much!

The night was filled with laughter as students and staff showcased their comedic talents:
  •  Impersonations of Presidents Barack Obama (And wow, this guy was spot on!) and Bill Clinton (Sorry, Mr. Brogley, the student impersonating Obama had you beat!)
  • A “Let’s Make a Date” skit where the lucky guy had his pick of some interesting ladies.
  • Musical Impressions. Think the music wheel on Jimmy Fallon. Awesome talent!
  • CMW Girls Basketball: The Sequel. A skit on the impact of a modern dance coach on a basketball team. Think snow angels (without the snow) being made on the gymnasium floor.
  • Alternate fairytale endings.
  • “Where are They Now” You Tube star impersonations
And these are just some of the humorous skits for the night. And speaking of humor, one of these skits showcased Mr. Brogley's high school picture. I thought you would all be interested to see Mr. Brogley with hair!

In between skits were educational pieces and interviews done at the school to learn about people’s perceptions of Autism and to information to knock out stereotypes and misconceptions.
The night ended with a special farewell from the entire cast which included 2 special tributes. The first tribute, honoring the hard work and dedication of Mr. Brogley. Well-deserved and touching!

The second tribute showcased a little boy Ayden, who at the young age of 5, is already advocating and raising awareness for people with Autism.
This was truly an inspiring evening. On behalf of the students I work for and with every day, I express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Brogley and the entire CMW cast of “Saturday Wright Live” for not only spreading awareness, but most importantly- acceptance.
