“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” Thornton Wilder

Tomorrow is the big event at the Bayou in Havre de Grace where the newest Harford County Teacher of the Year will be named.  I am so excited for our five finalists. It will be a wonderful evening of celebration filled with family, friends, and colleagues.

I was blessed to be surrounded by so many friends and supporters last year.  I will never forget the looks on the faces of my parents when I was named.  The fact that they were there to share the moment with me is a gift that I will carry with me forever.  They were my first teachers and they continue to teach me how to live fully, laugh heartily, and appreciate all that life has to offer.

I get to give my farewell speech tomorrow.  I realized very quickly that it would be impossible to personally thank everyone that I need to by name.  I would not want to risk leaving anyone out.  I also would not want to risk sounding like some of the Oscar winners who breathlessly go on forever.

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged me in this role.  I have learned so much in my time as Harford County’s Teacher of the Year for 2012-13.  This role has solidified for me that I work with some of the best and brightest in education.  I am so proud to have invested nineteen years and counting in our school system.

I do need to thank my principal, Dr. Sean Abel, who nominated me last year. I would never have dreamed of taking this on without your confidence in me as a teacher.  I also need to thank the teachers at Bel Air Middle School.  Your hard work and professionalism inspire me to do my best each day!

A special thank you to Teri Kranefeld, Lindsay Bilodeau, Beth Mink and Denee Crumrine for helping me to navigate the Teacher of the Year role.  You have been an outstanding support network and have helped me tremendously.

I am so excited for tomorrow night because I know what this means for the teacher who will be named.

I hope that in all places that I have expressed my gratitude for what has proved to be an unforgettable year.  Thank you, thank you, and thank you to everyone who has made this year one that I will never forget!
