Building Strong Foundations

In elementary grades, mathematics should help children develop as sense-makers - not just learn to follow "the rules".

The HCPS PreK - 5 Mathematics Curriculum builds reasoning skills, explores patterns, and provides opportunities to solve real-world problems. Through discussion, play, and guided exploration, students develop a deep understanding of mathematics, confidence in their abilities, and love for learning.

In mathematics, students are always learning about and using these mathematics habits of mind:

  • I can make sense of problems and keep trying, even when I get stuck
  • I can explain my thinking, listen to others' ideas, and give them feedback
  • I can use math tools like blocks, drawings, number lines, or rulers to help me solve problems.
  • I can see and use patterns to help me solve problems.
  • I can think about numbers and use them in ways that make sense to solve problems
  • I can use what I've learned before to solve new real-world problems
  • I can be careful, take my time, check my work, and use math words and symbols carefully.
  • I can notice when something repeats to help explain my thinking
