Harford Glen and Harford Glen Foundation Honor 2024–2025 Green Teachers of the Year

Harford Glen Environmental Education Center and the Harford Glen Foundation are proud to announce the recipients of the 2024–2025 Green Teacher of the Year awards. This annual recognition highlights educators who demonstrate outstanding commitment to environmental literacy and sustainability efforts in Harford County Public Schools.

This year’s honorees are Ms. Shannon O’Connor of Bel Air Elementary School and Ms. Laura O’Leary of North Harford High School.

Elementary Green Teacher of the Year: Ms. Shannon O’Connor, Bel Air Elementary School
Nominated by Principal Jeanna Gentile, Ms. O’Connor leads multiple Green School initiatives and is a driving force behind environmental education at Bel Air Elementary. She integrates hands-on science with real-world application by involving her fifth-grade students in the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ “Sunfish and Students” program, raising Bluegill fish right in the classroom.

As one of the first educators in Harford County to adopt this program, Ms. O’Connor now supports other schools in implementing it—her students even serve as mentors to their peers across the county. She also designs meaningful lessons on environmental stewardship, energy conservation, and the significance of Earth Day. Ms. O’Connor’s dedication, creativity, and belief in her students’ ability to shape the future make her a standout educator.

Secondary Green Teacher of the Year: Ms. Laura O’Leary, North Harford High School
Nominated by Principal Bryan Pawlicki, Ms. O’Leary teaches in the Natural Resources strand of the Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences Magnet Program at North Harford High School. She brings learning to life through immersive, place-based education experiences on the school’s rural campus.

Ms. O’Leary actively builds community partnerships to support her students’ Supervised Agricultural Experiences and Senior Capstone projects. As advisor of the school’s Envirothon team, she has led students to success at both the local and international levels—her team placed third in the 2024 international competition and is the current Harford County champion. Her energy and commitment to environmental education, teamwork, and sustainability have left a lasting impact on her students and the school community.

Congratulations to Ms. O’Connor and Ms. O’Leary for their incredible work in environmental education and for inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards!
