Fallston High School Student Named Maryland ProStart Student of the Year

Jared Osterhout, a student at Fallston High School, has been selected as the Maryland ProStart Student of the Year, a prestigious statewide honor recognizing excellence in culinary arts education.

Olivia Aberdeen, Director of Programs and Education for the Maryland Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, cited Osterhout's attention to detail and strong involvement in the classroom as key factors in his selection. He will be formally honored at the Maryland Restaurant Association's annual gala on April 19, 2026.

Osterhout is enrolled in the ProStart program at Fallston High School under the instruction of Chef Michelle Richie. The Maryland ProStart program is a nationwide, two-year high school curriculum that unites classroom learning and industry experience to develop the next generation of restaurant and foodservice leaders.

Nearly 80 Maryland high schools participate in the ProStart program, serving more than 4,000 students across the state. The program provides students with fundamental culinary and management skills, work experience with industry mentors, and opportunities to compete in the Maryland ProStart Student Invitational.

Students who complete the program requirements, including Level One and Level Two exams, 400 hours of work experience, and demonstrated proficiency in workplace competencies, earn the ProStart National Certificate of Achievement, which opens doors to scholarships and college credit.

The recognition highlights the impact of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs in Harford County Public Schools and the opportunities they provide students to develop real-world skills and industry credentials.
