Dublin Elementary School Media Specialist Named 2026 Green Teacher of the Year

Diane Thompson, Media Specialist at Dublin Elementary School, has been named the 2026 Green Teacher of the Year.

As a leader of Dublin Elementary's Green Team, Mrs. Thompson has been recognized for her commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and amplifying student voice throughout the school community. Her contributions to the school's Green School application and environmentally conscious changes to school practices have helped shape a culture of environmental awareness among staff and students.

Mrs. Thompson has collaborated with grade-level teams to create hands-on learning experiences rooted in environmental appreciation. Her work has included partnering with master gardeners to have students repurpose recyclable materials into indoor plant containers, maintaining indoor and outdoor greenery, and supporting the growth, harvest, and sale of student-grown lettuce to the school's Food and Nutrition staff. She also played a key role in Dublin's school-sponsored legacy garden, a lasting green space planted by students and families.

A hallmark of her leadership is empowering students to research environmental issues and advocate for change. When invasive trees needed to be removed from the schoolyard, it was Mrs. Thompson's students who researched the issue, wrote a letter requesting their removal, identified native replacements, and then planted and cared for the new trees themselves.

Congratulations to Mrs. Thompson on this well-deserved recognition, and to Dublin Elementary School on achieving Maryland Green School certification in 2026.
