Interim State Superintendent Approves Two-Day Calendar Waiver for HCPS

Interim State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jack R. Smith, approved the request made by Harford County Public Schools (HCPS) for a two-day waiver of the 180-day school year requirement for students. HCPS has been closed a total of eight days this school year for inclement weather.

HCPS proactively built 11 potential inclement weather days into the calendar, including three days in March: March 21, 2016 and March 22, 2016 that were previously teacher professional development days, and March 23, 2016 that was previously a spring break day.  These three days became regular school days.

Unless additional modifications to the school calendar become necessary, the last day for students in grades K-11 is Wednesday, June 15, 2016; the last day for students in Pre-K is Monday, June 13, 2016.

The official last day for teachers and 10-month instructional support employees is three days later, Monday, June 20, 2016. This includes the two professional development make-up days and the final professional development day for the school year. However, at the Monday, April 25, 2016 Board meeting, the Board of Education approved Superintendent Canavan’s proposal to waive one professional development day from the calendar. Therefore, the last day for teachers and 10-month instructional support staff to report for duty is Friday, June 17, 2016.
