Office of Business Education

Business education is an essential component of secondary education. Educating students for and about business practices and economic issues, developing skills necessary to use technology proficiently, acquiring knowledge to become a wise consumer, and preparing individuals for post-secondary education and the workplace, are the goals of the business education program. Each high school provides a comprehensive program of study in business education. The Computer Information Systems (CIS) curriculum offers electives in computer literacy, programming languages, software, and Internet applications. In addition, there are two pilot programs at Joppatowne High school: The CISCO Networking Academy that presents how to design, build, and maintain computer networks and the Computer Repair and Maintenance (CRAM) program presents how to install, maintain, troubleshoot, upgrade, and repair computers. There are also a number of general business courses that prepare students for careers in finance, management, accounting and legal studies. In addition, the Academy of Finance is a pilot program at Edgewood High School. This is a rigorous program of academic and technical studies in the Finance Industry. Students also participate in mentoring, job shadowing, and paid internship experiences.

Business Education offers a number of Advance Technology courses and the Applied Information Systems course satisfies one-half of the required one credit in technology. In addition, there are a number of Certificate of Merit (CM) courses for students seeking the CM diploma. Furthermore, many of the courses in business education are articulated with Harford Community College, enabling students to earn college credit while in high school.
