Safe and Responsible Use of AI

Guidelines for Safe, Ethical, and Responsible AI Use

While artificial intelligence offers tremendous educational benefits, it also requires careful implementation to ensure safety, privacy, and equity. As we integrate AI into our educational environment, we must prioritize responsible practices that protect our students and uphold our district's values.

Essential Safety Guidelines
Protecting Student Privacy

Safeguarding student information is paramount when using AI technologies.

  • Use Only Approved Tools
Only use AI tools vetted through district evaluation
  • Never Share Identifiable Information
Do not input student names or ID numbers
  • Be Mindful of Indirect Identification
Avoid detailed descriptions that may reveal identities
  • Follow FERPA Guidelines
Ensure compliance with federal privacy regulations
Using AI Tools with Students

When incorporating AI in student activities:

  • Provide Clear Guidelines
Establish specific parameters for appropriate AI use
  • Teach Critical Evaluation
    Help students understand AI limitations
  • Emphasize Attribution
Require proper documentation of AI assistance
  • Supervise Interactions
    Monitor student use
Addressing AI Bias

AI systems can reflect and amplify societal biases.

  • Recognize Limitations
Understand AI models may have biases from training data
  • Critically Evaluate Outputs
Review AI content for potential bias before use
  • Discuss with Students
Use AI limitations as teaching opportunities
  • Report Concerns
Document instances of bias in approved tools
Understanding Data Storage

Be aware of how AI systems handle data.

  • Know Your Tools
Understand data policies of approved AI systems
  • Assume Retention
Information entered may be stored and used for training
  • Use Anonymized Data
When discussing students, use generic descriptions only
  • Regular Review
Periodically review what data has been shared with AI tools
Critical Privacy Notice
Never input personally identifiable student information into non-approved AI systems. If you need to discuss a specific student situation using AI, always use anonymized information and generic descriptions.
Remember
Responsible AI use protects our students and strengthens our educational mission. When in doubt about AI safety or privacy, always err on the side of caution and consult with district technology leadership.
