HCPS Board Meeting Highlights

Monday, February 2, 2004

At a special business meeting of the Board of Education of Harford County held on Monday, February 2, 2004 at Bel Air Middle School the following actions and discussions took place.

Recognition

The Board recognized the January 2004 HCPS Educator Hall of Fame Inductees: James G. Smith and Jack E. McCracken

The Board recognized Edith D. (Edie) Smith, Aberdeen Middle School teacher, who recently achieved National Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

The Board recognized the 2004 HCPS All-State student musicians.

The Board recognized Kathryn L. (Kate) Smith, the 2004-05 Student-elect Representative on the Board of Education.

The Board recognized the five HCPS student pages who will serve in the 2004 General Assembly - Jacob Tanenbaum and Amanda Henninger (BAHS); Kevin Killeen and Diane Ketler (FHS); and Anastasia Feaster (EHS).

The Board recognized Kimberly (Kimmie) Meissner (FHS) 2004 U.S. National Junior Women's Figure Skating Champion.

Actions Items

The Board approved unanimously the proposed FY2005 HCPS unrestricted operating budget in the amount of $304,138,444.

The Board approved by a 5-1 vote, Mr. Thomas dissenting, placement of relocatable classrooms for the school year 2004-2005.

The Board assigned its members to be liaisons to the five Citizen Committees that advise the Board.
The assignments were:

  • Career and Technology Committee - Liaison: Mark Wolkow; Alternate: Thomas Fidler
  • Family Life Committee - Liaison: Salina Pleasant-Grice; Alternate: Thomas Fidler
  • Safety and Security - Liaison: Robert Magee; Alternate: Robert Thomas
  • Special Education - Liaison: Robin Rich; Alternate: Salina Pleasant-Grice
  • Gifted Education - Liaison: Robert Thomas; Alternate: Robin Rich
