Middle School

The middle school English Language Arts (ELA) program is designed to build upon foundational literacy skills while preparing students for the academic demands of high school. Aligned with the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards, the curriculum emphasizes growth in reading, writing, speaking, and listening through an integrated, thematic approach. Students engage with a variety of texts, including selections from the Savvas myPerspectives curriculum and HCPS-approved grade-level novels, to explore diverse perspectives and deepen their understanding of the human experience. Instruction focuses on developing critical thinking, effective communication, and analytical skills. Throughout middle school, students refine essential literacy skills and work toward advanced proficiency in all areas of English Language Arts. The program is designed to ensure that every student is equipped for success as they transition to high school and beyond.

High School

The HCPS English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for high school students is a comprehensive, four-year program designed to prepare all learners for success in college, careers, and the workforce. Students earn credits toward graduation through a sequential course of study, with opportunities to explore enriching electives that foster creativity and authentic learning experiences. Aligned with the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards, the curriculum emphasizes reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills essential for academic and real-world success. Instruction is designed to support achievement on the Maryland High School Assessments in English, ensuring students are well-prepared for post-secondary opportunities.


In addition to core ELA courses, students may choose from a variety of electives including:

  • Journalism
  • Speech
  • Humanities
  • Creative Writing

These electives offer engaging pathways for students to express themselves, explore diverse perspectives, and develop strong communication skills.
