Please join us in congratulating Dr. Susan Brown, Executive Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, who has been named the next Superintendent of Smyrna School District in Delaware. Please see the full press release from the Smyrna School District:

The Smyrna School Board of Education named Dr. Susan P. Brown as Superintendent at a meeting of the board held on Thursday, June 23, 2022. She assumes the role on Monday, July 18 in advance of the 2022-2023 school year.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Brown to the Smyrna School District,” said Board Member Dr. Charlie Wilson. “We recognize her extensive record of leadership in education and are excited about the path of our district going forward.”

Dr. Brown joins the Smyrna School District after having served over 30 years in public education, most recently as the Executive Director for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the Harford County Public Schools in Bel Air, Maryland.

Since 2013 she has served as the top-ranking instructional leader for the Harford County school system, leading a team of highly talented professionals in the areas of curriculum and assessment, instructional pedagogy, professional learning, and school performance and achievement initiatives.

In May 2021, Dr. Brown completed the Aspiring Superintendent Academy through The School Superintendents Association. As a veteran educator, Dr. Brown has a variety of classroom and leadership positions, including middle school mathematics teacher and department chairperson, teacher mentor, and coordinator of intervention. Additionally, she is an adjunct instructor for Notre Dame of Maryland University teaching graduate level coursework for aspiring administrators.

Dr. Brown holds a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Innovation from Wilmington University, a master’s degree in Administration and Supervision from Loyola University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Towson University and an associate of arts degree in General Studies from Harford Community College.

“It is an incredible honor and privilege to be selected as the next Superintendent for the Smyrna School District,” said Dr. Brown. “I want to thank the Board of Education for their confidence in my leadership and am eager to meet with and learn from them, the students, the employees, the families, and the community members who make the district exceptional. I am excited to become part of the close-knit Smyrna community, working with all stakeholders to honor past traditions, while also preparing our students for the future.”

The hiring of a new superintendent comes after the announcement of the retirement of former superintendent Patrik Williams after 37 years in public education, 18 of those years in the Smyrna School District with five as Superintendent. Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Deborah Judy has served as Acting Superintendent during the transition.

“The board would like to acknowledge the hard work, dedication, and integrity with which Mrs. Deb Judy has served during this transition and over the past two years of the pandemic,” said Board President Vetra Evans-Gunter. “Deb cares deeply about our community and we are grateful for her continued commitment to the district.”

Though Dr. Brown’s appointment is not official until July 18, she will attend the July 6 reorganization meeting of the Smyrna Board of Education.
