Teach HCPS logo! TeacHCPS is an innovative employee development campaign and recruitment strategy created and implemented to aggressively build strong pathways for all positions within the school district for future hiring needs, with a focus on finding and developing future educators.

Our focus is on Grow Your Own (GYO). As part of this initiative the district will design and launch a model school for student learning and educator pre-service training intended to attract and train new, non-traditional jobseekers for careers in education, while also testing innovative models to increase equitable education outcomes for our students.

Under the umbrella of TeacHCPS are support opportunities for students and adults.

TeacHCPS offers multiple adult-focused pathways designed to develop and advance the careers of current HCPS employees and community members interested in education. These feature:

  • Model School Pilot which provides structured, real-world classroom experiences for undergraduate interns and career changers by pairing them with trained mentor teachers.
  • The Paraeducator Professional Pathway Program which supports HCPS paraeducators in becoming certified teachers by offering tailored guidance, mentorship, and access to degree programs through Towson University in Northeastern Maryland (TUNE).
  • Project SEQUEL (Supporting Educator Qualifications, Uplift, and Education Licensure) provides financial, academic, and licensure support for non-certified staff seeking to transition into full-time teaching roles.

These programs are essential to HCPS’s Grow Your Own (GYO) efforts, ensuring long-term staffing stability and increasing educator diversity across the district.

TeacHCPS Model School Pilot

The HCPS Model School Pilot, launched in 2024 at Roye-Williams Elementary School (RWES) and is the flagship element of Harford County Public Schools’ Grow‑Your‑Own (GYO) TeacHCPS initiative. In 2025 pilots began in C. Milton Wright High School and Magnolia Middle School.

The pilot paired pre-service teachers, College seniors and some juniors with highly trained mentor teachers and provides cohort-based support, in-school university coursework, and professional development aimed at enhancing teacher readiness and retention.

Interns describe the experience as inclusive, respectful, and immersive—feeling truly integrated into school culture and professional duties hcps.org. The program’s broader goal is to refine and scale this model into purpose-built educator preparation environments (e.g., Harford Academy), foster partnerships with universities like Towson and Coppin State, offer conditional certification pathways, and actively recruit candidates from within HCPS.

This approach helps HCPS invest in stable, long-term staffing by encouraging talented individuals who already live or work in Harford County to pursue careers in education effectiveness, and long-term retention in Harford County.
